Memorial in Oslo
O'Keeffe - April 17, 2012
While Americans live in a fear-based society, Norwegians show more tolerance and compassion.
Last July a Norwegian man massacred 77 of his fellow countrymen, many of them teenagers at a summer camp. Anders Behring Breivik confessed to both the bombing of government buildings and the mass shooting at the camp. His trial starts today.
I lived in Norway my junior year of college. I attended classes and immersed myself in the culture, working at a jewelry store, a kiosk, a restaurant, and an amusement park over the course of 12 months. I also spent five months in a mountain survival and recreation program, so I was constantly close to nature. I majored in Norwegian, so I speak the language fluently. My heritage is half Norwegian. I'd go so far as to say that my psyche is largely Norwegian.
Response to Crises
So I find it curious how Norwegians are responding to their domestic tragedy, compared to how Americans have reacted to threats and acts of violence.
Granted, the U.S. has suffered losses far greater than Norway in terrorist attacks, whether the perpetrators be local citizens or foreigners. Still, Norwegians have always displayed this incredible sense of compassion and calm restraint that runs deep in their veins. I believe it has largely to do with their ongoing connection to nature.
From a young age, Norwegians learn to embrace nature. They say that Norwegians are born with skis on their feet and it's entirely true. I've seen 3-year-olds tear up the ski slopes and ten-year-olds cross-country ski for miles across mountain tops. Have you ever seen a Norwegian bracing themselves against the cold? I haven't.

Schoolgirls in Bhutan
O'Keeffe - April 2, 2012
While Americans struggle for balance, the people of Bhutan put wellbeing on the map.
As women in American society, we are practically delusional about expectations of ourselves. We have normalized the over-extended role that we play in life, trying to be everything to everybody. And I don't know about you, but I can't seem to control the frizz in my hair and I only have 30 seconds to deal with it before I'm late for my 8 o'clock appointment.

Itinerary
Grand Canyon Trip, September 8-16, 2012

Saturday, September 8
We will fly to Phoenix and drive 4 hours to the Grand Canyon National Park. The sprawling Grand Canyon Village is discreetly tucked in among pinyon pines and juniper trees. Enjoy an evening stroll around the grounds, peek inside El Tovar Hotel, where Teddy Rosevelt frequently dined, and get a first glimpse of the famous architecture of Mary Colter. We’ll bed down at Mather Campground for the first of two nights.
Sunday, September 9
Hiking distance: 2 miles, Hiking time: 1.5 hours, Starting elevation: 6800 ft., Ending elevation: 6800 ft.
I’ll lead an easy morning hike to warm up the leg muscles and you can spend the rest of the day enjoying the civilized rim and its amenities (you know, like plumbing and sofas), all while taking in the breath-taking views.
Relaxing on the rim: Spend hours picking out frig magnets for your family, get a chocolate shake at the soda fountain right on the rim, or browse through the authentic native american art and craftwork in the Hopi House. You can also take a free shuttle to various lookouts along the South Rim or just sit and watch people from all over the world. Camp for a second night at Mather Campground.
Monday, September 10
Hiking distance: 7 miles, Hiking time: 5 hours, Starting elevation: 7200 ft., Ending elevation: 2480 ft.
Throw on your pack and start the most magnificent hiking day of your life! This trail will take your breath away at every turn.
We’ll park at the Backcountry Office, weigh our packs on their hanging scale, and then catch the shuttle to the South Kaibab Trail Head. Enjoy the stunning views at Cedar Ridge, O’Neill Butte, The Tipoff, and every inch of trail in between! Then descend into the Inner Gorge and catch glimpses of the Colorado River. What seems like a tiny stream will become a grand waterway as you complete the journey to the bottom and make your way to the Bright Angel Campground.
After setting up camp, you have options to explore Phantom Ranch and hear a ranger talk at the outdoor amphitheater.
Tuesday, September 11
Hiking distance: 7 miles, Hiking time: 5 hours, Starting elevation: 2480 ft., Ending elevation: 4080 ft.
Eat, pack lunches, break camp, and head up the North Kaibab Trail, towards the North Rim. Notice how you begin to forget about the rest of your life and completely commit to this landscape, these trails, this incredible group of women.
Arrive at Cottonwood Campground, the most remote camping location you will likely ever experience. With a helicopter landing pad behind the campground, you'll feel safe that you're only minutes away from medical care in the Grand Canyon Village or Flagstaff. Although you won't need it! Enjoy a quite evening a this incredible site, taking in the bright heaven of stars above, unadulterated by light pollution.
Wednesday, September 12
Hiking distance: optional distances. Starting elevation: 4080 ft., Ending elevation: 4080 ft.
This is your optional hiking day. You can ditch your big, heavy pack and either do a 3-mile round trip to Ribbon Falls, a 4.2-mile round trip up to Roaring Springs, or the full 13.6-mile round trip to the North Rim and back (elevation 8250 ft.). This is your day to choose what feels best to you.
Make a list of the things you want to leave in the Canyon: old emotions and beliefs, grudges, habits, and self-doubts.
We'll meet back at the campground at 4 pm and trade stories from the day while cooking and drinking hot tea at the picnic table.
Thursday, September 13
Hiking distance: 7 miles, Hiking time: 4.5 hours, Starting elevation: 4080 ft., Ending elevation: 2480 ft.
Break camp and hike 7 miles back down to the bottom of the Canyon. Enjoy the new-found confidence of hiking along a familiar trail and try your hand at recognizing terrain from the opposite vantage point. Not as easy as it sounds!
Make a list of the things you want to take with you from the Canyon: new beliefs, confidence, and emotions.
Sleep soundly at Bright Angel Campground.
Friday, September 14
Hiking distance: 4.3 miles, Hiking time: 3 hours, Starting elevation: 2480 ft., Ending elevation: 3800 ft.
Enjoy an easy day. We'll sleep in a bit, lounge around lazily, have a good breakfast, and then break camp and hike half way up the South Rim along Bright Angel Trail to Indian Garden, an oasis with a host of Cottonwood trees to take shade under.
Partake in an optional 2-mile round trip out to Plateau Point, a cliff overlooking the Colorado 1300 feet below, if you can't seem to sit still and want to see it all.
Camp at Indian Garden Campground and burn the list of things you are leaving in the Canyon.
Saturday, September 15
Hiking distance: 4.6 miles, Hiking time: 3-4 hours, Starting elevation: 3800 ft., Ending elevation: 6800 ft.
Take it on out of the Canyon! Complete your amazing feat and celebrate your accomplishment back at the top with a long-deserved shower!
Repack equipment, prepare for departure on Sunday. Enjoy a special meal at El Tovar in their famous dining room.
Sleep in an historic cabin, only feet from the rim.
Sunday, September 16
Get a quick bite for breakfast, load up, and drive 4 hours back to Phoenix and the airport. Fly back to Milwaukee, a changed person.

Itinerary
Grand Canyon Trip, Spring of Each Year

Saturday, April xx
We will fly to Phoenix and drive 4 hours to Hualapai Hotel in Peach Springs, AZ, located on the Hualapai Reservation.
Sunday, April xx
Hiking distance: 10 miles, Hiking time: 4-5 hours, Starting elevation: 5200 ft., Ending elevation: 3200 ft.
We’ll drive 60 miles to the starting point to access the country’s most remote town. Supai is located inside the Canyon and is only accessible via a 10-mile trail or helicopter. It is home to 450 Havasupai residents and is the administrative and social center of the tribe.
Strap on you pack and enjoy the spectacular scenery as we walk down the historic trail. Horse traffic on the trail may be heavy at times. Everything from groceries to movies, and the mail, are delivered by pack train. Your pack will weigh up to thirty percent of your body weight and you’ll quickly learn to adjust the straps for the most comfortable fit.
Arrive in town at mile 8 and wander into the cafe, modest grocery store, and tourist office. Expect dusty roads, satellite dishes, and helicopters delivering the tourists with flip flops. We’ll hike another two miiles and collapse at the campground, where you can swim in the pool of the waterfalls and soak your feet in Havasu Creek.
Camp at Havasu Campground.
Monday, April xx - Rest Day
Hiking distance: Optional 6 miles, Hiking time: Up to you, Starting elevation: 3200 ft., Ending elevation: 3200 ft.
Explore three of the four amazing waterfalls in the area. Havasu Falls plunges 100 feet into a pool of blue-green waters just 100 meters from the campground. Supai Falls offers a shelf behind the falls to navigate. Follow the chains and wood ladders with slippery toeholds to the base of Mooney Falls, to dip in the swimming hole. If time and ability allow, walk downstream in the water of Havasu Creek and climb down the four terraces of Beaver Falls.
Tuesday, April xx
Hiking distance: 10 miles, Hiking time: 5 hours, Starting elevation: 3200 ft., Ending elevation: 5200 ft.
It’s time to try out your uphill hiking skills. We’ll slowly walk out of the canyon, carrying plenty of water and taking frequent breaks. You’ll appreciate the attention you paid to packing light prior to the trip. (hint, hint!)
We’ll then hop in the van, shower at a nearby RV park, and drive 200 miles and 1600 vertical feet further uphill to the Grand Canyon National Park.
Wednesday, April xx - Rest Day
Hiking distance: 2 miles (optional), Hiking time: 1.5 hours, Starting elevation: 6860 ft., Lowest elevation: 6100 ft., Ending elevation: 6860 ft.
This is your day to relax and give your legs a break from long days on the trail. I’ll lead an optional easy morning hike down the switchbacks of Bright Angel Trail to keep the muscles loose. You can spend the rest of the day enjoying the civilized rim and its amenities (you know, like plumbing and sofas), all while taking in the breath-taking views.
Spend hours picking out frig magnets for your family, get a chocolate shake at the soda fountain right on the rim, or browse through the authentic native american art and craftwork in the Hopi House. You can also take a free shuttle to various lookouts along the South Rim or just sit and watch people from all over the world.
You will not need a guide for your afternoon rim roaming, so I will get supplies and prepare for the trip into the canyon.
Camp for a second night at Mather Campground.
Thursday, April xx
Hiking distance: 7 miles, Hiking time: 4 hours, Starting elevation: 7200 ft., Ending elevation: 2480 ft.
Throw on your pack and start the most magnificent hiking day of your life! This trail will take your breath away at every turn.
We’ll park at the Backcountry Office, weigh our packs on their hanging scale, and then catch the shuttle to the South Kaibab Trail Head and hit the trail. As we go, we will soak in the immense beauty, enjoying the stunning views at Cedar RIdge, O’Neill Butte, The Tipoff, and every inch of trail in between! Then we'll descend even further into the Inner Gorge and catch glimpses of the Colorado River. What seems like a tiny stream will become a grand waterway as you complete the journey to the bottom and make your way to the Bright Angel Campground.
After setting up camp, you have options to explore Phantom Ranch and hear a ranger talk at the outdoor amphitheater.
Friday, April xx - Rest Day
Continue to explore the Phantom Ranch area and nearby day-hike trails, attend another ranger talk, or muster your courage for a cold dip in the Colorado River.
Saturday, April xx
Hiking distance: 9 miles, Hiking time: 5 hours, Starting elevation: 2480 ft., Ending elevation: 6860 ft.
Walk back out of the Canyon on the Bright Angel Trail - a more gentle slope than the trail coming down. We’ll take frequent breaks along the way, stopping at Indian Gardens for lunch and a long rest.
Back at the top, we’ll check into rooms at the historic Bright Angel Lodge in the Grand Canyon Village, only yards from the rim. Choose from your own private room or share with a friend. Relish in a hot shower down the hall or in your room, based on availability. Enjoy one last evening in the Park and join the group in celebrating a week of mental freedom and grand-scale physical accomplishment! Smile for a few photos.
Sunday, April xx
Clean your equipment and repack. Head back to the Phoenix airport and fly home, full of renewed energy and physical vigor!
